Obey Your Thirst
This shot was taken on a short walk in Eugene to test out a new lens I had just gotten, "the nifty fifty", the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, which I was using on my wife's Nikon D40x.

I was shooting in manual focus mode when I saw this guy coming down the street. As I often do, I fired off a couple of shots even though I was not nearly close enough, but it gets me in the flow. There was no cover and no way this guy was not going to see me coming.

As I worked closer, I offered up a big smile and stepped up, clearly close now, and kept shooting. And we started this dance, me smiling with an occasional, 'yeah", "cool" and him offering up some smiles of his own. Then I nodded a "thank you", he nodded in return, and we both boogied down the street in opposite directions. I made a print that I was going to give him, but never saw him again.

I took this when I was a research scientist (since retired) working at Oregon Research Institute in Eugene. I was working on a problem that just refused to yield to a solution, so I took a break to clear my head and walked over to the campus with my camera.

It was a beautiful Fall day Oct. 14, 2008 - the last day of registration for the upcoming Presidential Elections and students were busy getting folks registered at the last minute.

Some of the student were milling about listing to music when I caught this woman standing in some of that beautiful Fall light. I posted it on Flickr where it was very well received. About six months later she saw her picture and contacted me. She was thrilled with the shot and gave me permission to use her name, Melissa Hoffman.

Then she disappeared until I got an email from her out of the blue 5 years later and was able to give her a package of digital images I had taken of her that day.

Here's to you Melissa for being such a good sport!

Enchanting Medusa
This was taken at Saturday Market in Eugene, Oregon. She spotted me in my newbie clumsiness taking multiple shots of her. I finally got what I was after with this shot - that "almost smile" - that flashed across her face periodically.

Like many of my around the town candid street shots I print them hoping that I'll be able to give them to the person next I see them. It's been several years and I still haven't run into her... but I'm still lookin'.

Lord of the Flies
This was taken at the Saturday Market in Eugene, Oregon over by the courthouse where, when the weather is nice, folks congregate for a day of drumming. Folks would come and go all day around a core group of drummers who always showed up early and stayed late with that unmistakable scent of ganja in the air.

This kid as you can imagine was a real hellion, and oh so photogenic. This is one of two shots I have of him that I really though captured his spirit well and one of my early street shots, circa the summer of 2008. It's funny how you can remember the circumstances of the shots you take. While I was excited about such a photo op, I remember thinking, "I wonder how life will unfold for this kid." I was not wholly optimistic.

The young ones making a pit stop in downtown Eugene which apparently included a budding photographer. I sauntered to the back and sitting down at a table behind this scene got off a couple of shots unnoticed.

I had my eye on these two street kids in Eugene, Oregon for some time. I just loved the look of the one kid and his "Fight Back" attitude and the other kid with his totally cool Charles Bronson 'Youth Attack' DS 13 Heist Punk T-shirt ... and yeah, I got so caught taking this shot, but not before I got them in this moment unawares! :)

I was wrapping things up when I saw these kids walking down the street and knew they'd pass by this mural. So I hustled down the street and I'm literally in the middle of the street with cars stopped taking this shot, with that little girl at the end taking it all in. :)

Can't you just hear the little one's thoughts? "Jeez, will you get a load of that guy dancing around in the middle of the street! What an idiot!"

"Earth Mama" is a staple of Eugene's Saturday Market. She's still got that care free "hippie" spirit, a loving open manner and likely to break out in a twirling dance at the drop of a hat or beat of a drum.

This is so very Eugene!

We have many long time hippies in our community and this gentleman here looks like he had way too much fun in the '60's. :)

I work very close in and could not figure out what the heck he was staring at... except perhaps the echoes of long ago acid trips of his full-on Dead Head concert days rattling around in his head.

In any event. Totally cracked me up!

This was taken in Eugene's downtown that gives homage to one of her native son's with his statue on the mall. "The" Ken Kesey. The '60's "Merry Prankster" and hero to a generation that vowed to drop-out and tune-in with the help of LSD.

Kesey, perhaps was more widely known as the author of "Sometimes a Great Notion" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".

I caught this guy unawares playfully mirroring this '60's counter-culture icon. I think Kesey would have approved. :)

The Magic Bus - Further
Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster's

As Bob Santelli, artistic director of the Experience Music Project in Seattle put it, “I consider the bus to be one of the most important icons of the ’60s Counter Culture. Inside that bus occurred many of the things the counter culture was all about, from a revolutionary perspective. That is mobility, freedom to be on the move, and to react to situations and create situations to react to, drug use and experimenting with drugs, and the importance of music in a cultural revolution.”

This was taken at the Eugene Celebration Fall of 2009 after it had been newly restored.

The story goes that their famous LSD inspired road trip on the "Magic Bus" left the driveway with Ray Charles singing “Hit the Road Jack,” then promptly proceeded to run out of gas. :)

Girl Among Iraqi War Casualty Boots
This photo was taken at the "Eyes Wide Open Exhibit: The Human and Economic Cost of War" on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Oregon. This young lady is seen here among actual US Iraqi war causality boots.

I happened to stroll by the exhibit on my way home thinking I was done shooting. I was way out of range with the camera set to a too low shutter speed but had to take the shot. Even though it is a bit soft it remains one of my favorites. Her red dress and flip-flops, her expression, the placement of that strand of hair, her position in relation to the boots and the way her feet and head are turned in different directions gives the sense that in the midst of this loss she doesn't know which way to go physically or emotionally. Despite the lack of crispness this one really tells a story I think and draws a narrative from the viewer.

I see in my notes taken at the time, the following entry, "Would love to do more of this sort of thing. I think I'm really gravitating toward street photography." :)

Someone to Watch Over Me
I was less than happy. Bordering on bummed. Eugene is not an easy place to appease my street photography muse. I had hoped that the "Eugene Celebration" would offer an opportunity to get a critical mass of folks out and about with some hope of an interesting Brownian motion mix that is street photography mana. But it was raining, dark, and fairly dismal out and I was not in the mood for wet,... again. Apparently, I was not alone as the attendance was pretty sparse.

My internal whining hit pause when I saw this father and son standing and looking across the way at some nearby activity. That's all it took. I was in the "flow", moving to a position that would tell this small story of protective fatherly love. And also noticed how this "wet" I was so recently moaning about was really going to add to this shot!

That's how it goes on the street, you just never know.
